I’ve decided that I’m opening an art gallery, but that art gallery is mostly hypothetical and exists as a newsletter on the Internet. Welcome, and thanks for coming.
This week’s exhibit is SMALL BUSINESS ART.
First, a well-known piece by Corita Kent, who was a nun for a time and made screen prints mostly composed of type. She usually found that type via advertisements or signage. The Market Basket was a shop near her studio.
The text in the middle reads:
Mary does laugh; and she sings and runs and wears bright orange today she'd probably do her shopping at the Market Basket.
Next up: this intriguing bottle of John the Greek salad dressing.
Recently it seems to me that the grocery store is filled with products that have very trendy or “modern” labels, so this little bottle of John the Greek salad dressing is just a delight. I especially love the tiny black and white photo of John. I sincerely hope it was made by one of John’s family members on Microsoft Publisher.
(Note: the dressing is delicious.)
And lastly, I present you with this trash can found at my local donut shop. I think it may have more personality than any other trash can I know. The big red THANK YOU caught my attention at first, but the collection of objects on top really drew me in.
LMK if you’ve seen any stellar art around town at your local small businesses. I’d love to see.
THE GIFT SHOP
This Equals That: a small, simple little art book that I think was created for children, but it just as exhilarating for adults. Jason Fulford’s photos of everyday things always captivate me.
Corita Kent Beatitudes Poster: a really joyful little print for a happy little price.
Uncommon Kitchens: the most interesting interior design book I’ve read in a while. Gosh, is it good! Each kitchen featured is really unique but still accessible? You have to see it for yourself.
Mitsubishi Pencils: every gift shop needs a great pencil, you know?

My husband and I just celebrated our 13th anniversary with some friends in our backyard and my cool little sister made a perfectly themed playlist. It’s a little bit romantic, a little bit spooky, with some classics and some weird and wonderful things for good measure. It’s perfect for fall, in my very biased opinion.
Cowabunga for now,
